Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the US, is a rapper and actress. Her performance as a singer, music as well as a film and television artist has earned her the distinction of two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also won an Grammy Award along with six additional Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah was the daughter of a Newark New Jersey schoolteacher and a Newark New Jersey police officer Lancelot Owens Senior was raised and born within Newark New Jersey. The couple separated when Latifah reached the age of ten. Latifah grew up in the Baptist religion and went to Catholic school in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is her name for stage when she was eight years old. It means delicate in Arabic. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward for her basketball team in high school. In a school production, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah started to beatbox for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were united around the producer DJ Mark the 45 king. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King, recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music who was working for Latifah at the time was awed by her single. In 1988, she dropped Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
